STARK NAKED AND THE CAR THIEVES

A retrospective on our band in the California Fifties, Sixties and Seventies

Les Silvey - birth of a player

I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 8,1944. The oldest of 5 children, my parents were barely out of their teens when I came along. My Dad was still off fighting WWII, and wouldn't be home permanently for another year or so.

As far back as I can remember music was a big part of my life. My Dad was an amateur drummer, and when I was very young, there was always a set of drums in the house. I grew up listening to “big band” music, and the popular music of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, as well as the big country hits and artists of the day. I was hooked then, but little did I know how much.

Then it happened, that new sound came along. It was rhythm & blues, rockabilly, country, a little bit of everything really, and we called it “Rock ‘N’ Roll”. I loved it instantly. Even though I was around 10 or 11 years old in the very beginning, I couldn’t get enough. I would sing along with all the songs, and I knew every word----we all did. It was a phenomenon that was going to change music forever, and change many lives as well.
